Case 1. CSVP 2024-3224 (NTU2021-734I, NTU GIMCP, H.Y. Wang and Y.C. Chang)

Oriental dove (Streptopelia orientalis), eight oriental turtle doves were found dead in a walk-in aviary. Additionally, the other two birds were euthanatized due to the presence of neurological signs such as head twisting. All of these doves were necropsied.

Morphologic diagnosis :

Brain: Meningoencephalitis, lymphoplasmacytic, mild, subacute, multifocal, with perivascular cuffing.

Kidney: Nephritis, lymphoplasmacytic, subacute, moderate to severe, multifocal to coalescing, with trematodes infection

Liver: Hepatitis, lymphoplasmacytic, moderate to severe, subacute, multifocal.

Pancreas : Pancreatitis, granulomatous, multifocal, mocderate, chronic, with acinar atrophy and hemosiderosis

Duodenum : Enteritis, diffsue, severe, chronic, cellular debris with oocyts

Lab. examination:

1.     Kit : Avian influenza Ag (-)

2.     RT-PCR : Avian paramyxovirus 1 Target gene: Fusion protein Amplicon: 210 Base-pair (+)

3.     In situ hybridization: kidney, lung, intestine: (+)

Dx: Avian influenza in Oriental turtle doves

Case 2. CSVP 2024-3225 (CM23-11001, ADDC NCHU, C.P. Huang, J.W. Liao, and H.Y. Chiou)

Holstein cow (Bos taurus), 5-month-old, showed signs of anorexia and bloody diarrhea. The morbidity and mortality were about 25% (5/20) and 25% (5/20), respectively.

Morphologic diagnosis :

Ileum: Enteritis, necrotizing, severe, diffuse, chronic, with lymphoid depletion, crypt necrosis, and focal mild coccidia infection

Lab. examination:

RT-PCR:

M: DNA marker

1: Sample BVDV (+) Sequencing result: BVDV 1b

Dx: Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) -mucosal disease in a Holstein calf

   Nursery pig, 8~9-week-old, showed signs of cough, dyspnea and joint swelling. The prevalence was 10% (40/400).

Morphologic diagnosis :

Abdominal cavity: Polyserositis, purulent, fibrinous, locally extensive, chronic-active, severe

Lung: Bronchopneumonia, interstitial, proliferative, purulent, locally extensive, chronic-active, severe

Turbinate: Rhinitis, lymphocytic, locally extensive, chronic, moderate, with basophilic intranuclear inclusion body

Heart: Pericarditis, purulent, diffuse, severe, acute

Lab. examination:

Bact: lung: Pasteurella multocida (+)

PCR: Lung: Porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV) (+), PRRS (+), MHR) (+)

Dx: Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex in Nursery Pigs

Case 4. CSVP 2024-3227 (P113-001, ADDC NPUST, L.Y. Chen, Y.W. Tsai, Y.H. Hsieh, Y.C. Li, and M.C. Cheng)

      Red feather native chickens, 38-day-old, showed clinical signs of depression, sneezing and dyspnea. Cumulative mortality for the 4 days period was 1.6% (160/10,000). An autopsy revealed enlarged kidneys and caseous material adhering to the air sacs and lungs.

Morphologic diagnosis :

Trachea: Tracheitis, lymphoplasmacytic, proliferative, diffuse, moderate, chronic with epithelial hyperplasia

Lung: Pleuropneumonia, necrotizing, multifocal, severe, acute

Kidney: Nephritis, heterophilic, multifocal, severe, acute

Bursa: Lymphoid depletion, atrophy, diffuse, severe, chronic

Spleen: Lymphoid depletion, atrophy, diffuse, mild, chronic

Brain, proventriculus, BM, liver: NSL

Lab. examination:

Bact: Air sac: Maldi tof identified as Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT); Lung: Escherichia coli (E. coli) (+)

PCR: Lung: IBD, IB, MG (+)

IHC Stain-IBV (+) in kidneys

Dx: IB, IBD, CCRD complex infection

    Mouse, Vhlh knockout, 2.5-month-old, male. The mouse presented paraparesis.

Morphologic diagnosis :

Paraspinal nodule: extramedullary hematopoiesis, multifocal, moderate, chronic with axonal degeneration

Heart: Hemangioma, multifocal, severe, chronic

Spleen: extramedullary hematopoiesis, diffuse, moderate, chronic

Dx: Knockout Mouse Model of Von Hippel-Lindau Disease

Case 6. CSVP 2024-3229 (2024-012-1, VRI, Y.C. Tu, S.C. Hu, Y.P. Liu, and Y.W. Chen)

     Black-faced spoonbill (Platalea minor) 篦鷺, adult, male, was rescued due to botulism at local hospital, and then the bird was transfer to TBRI's Wildlife First Aid Station, but cannot survived after retention. The bird showed clinical signs of anorexia and depression. At necropsy, hydropericardium and renomegaly were found.

Morphologic diagnosis :

Brain: Encephalitis, necrotizing, multifocal, acute, mild, with neuronal degeneration, severe

Lab. examination:

PCR: Avian influenza virus, H5N1 subtype, HA: PLREKRRKR/GLF (+)

ISH Stain : AI (+) in the brain, kidney, spleen, heart
