Zebra Shark (Stegostoma fasciatum), 2-year-old, Female. The zebra shark was anorexic, lethargic, floating upside down, and biting its own tail. Hematology and plasma biochemistry revealed increased albumin and CPK. The animal was found dead few days later.

Morphological diagnosis:

1.         Meningoencephalitis, granulocytic, locally-extensive, severe, acute to subacute, with intralesional protozoan organisms, cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem

2.         Hepatitis, necrohemorrhagic, multifocal to coalescing, moderate to severe, peracute, liver

3.         Protozoan: Miamiensis avidus (syn. Philasterides dicentrarchi)

Etiological Dx.

Locally Extensive Meningoencephalitis Caused by Miamiensis avidus in a Zebra Shark

Morphological diagnosis:

1.         the primary affected region by the cellular neoplastic growth should be the synovial cavity and the neoplasm are also efface the surounding articular cartilages and invade the bone structures

2.         CK (+); Vimentin (+)

Etiological Dx.

synovial cell sarcoma

Case 3. CSVP 2018-2967 (TSN17021, ADDC NCYU, P.H. Wu, H.C Kuo, C.L. Chen, Y.C. Su, M.H. Chang, D.Y. Lo)

Finishing pigs, 24-week-old, were submitted to ADDC for disease diagnosis. They showed clinical signs of depression and anorexia. The morbidity rate was 20% (375/1,875). The mortality rate was 1.92% (36/1,875)

Morphological diagnosis:

1.     Spleen: necrosis, multifocal, mild, acute,

2.     Skin: Dermatitis, multifocal, mild, acute with DIC diamond-skin disease

3.     Heart: DIC

4.     G (+), Filamentous, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae

Weaned pig, from a farrow-to-finish farm, showed clinical signs of paddling with legs when lying in a lateral position and nystagmus. The morbidity was 5% (15/300).

Morphological diagnosis:

1.     Brain: Meningoencephalitis, purulent, diffuse, severe, acute

Formosan Giant Flying Squirrel, juvenile, intact male, weighing 644 g was submitted for pathological examination with a history of facture at the 3rd phalange of left forelimb. The patient had an amputation on Oct 16th, 2017, but was found dead on 31th, 2017. At necropsy, the lung lobes were diffusely mottled tan to red in color and presented heavy and wet. On the surface of lung, liver and heart had multifocal flat, irregular, pale tan to white with variable sized, measuring 0.1 × 0.1 cm – 0.2 × 0.4 cm areas.

Morphological diagnosis:

1.   Liver: Hepatitis, necrotizing, histiocytic, multifocal to coalescing, subacute, severe, with abundant intra-/extrahistiocytic apicomplexan zoites , etiology consistent with Toxoplasma gondii

2.   Spleen: Splenitis, necrotizing, histiocytic, multifocal to coalescing to locally extensive, subacute, severe, and lymphoid depletion, with severe lymphocytic depletion and abundant intra-/extrahistiocytic apicomplexan zoites , etiology consistent with Toxoplasma gondii

3.   Mediastinal lymph node: Lymphadenitis, necrotizing, histiocytic, multifocal to coalescing, , subacute, severe, with severe lymphocytic depletion and intra-/extrahistiocytic apicomplexan zoites , etiology consistent with abundant Toxoplasma gondii

4.   OCR: Primer targeting Toxoplasma gondii ITS1 gene (+)
