Case 1. CSVP 2017-2947 (CO16-746, GIVP NCHU, Y. C. Tuan, H.Y. Chiou, J. P. Kao, J. W. Liao)

Hamster, 7-month-old, male, a mass was detected in the right caudal abdomen by palpation. This mass was surgically removed. Tumor mass has invading into the muscular layer but no affected in the abdominal cavity. This mass was measured to be 13 mm x 6 mm x 10 mm in size and sent for further pathological diagnosis.

Morphological diagnosis:

1.     Mass: tumor cells expressed as spindle, high nuclear/cytoplasm ratio, and mitosis with collage formation

2.       MT, SR, Collagen type I, Vimentin (++), Myoglobin, Decimin (-), S-100 (+?)

Etiological Dx.

Fibrosarcoma in the abdominal wall of male hamster

Case 2. CSVP 2017-2948 (CW17-022, GIVP, NCHU, H.Y. Lin, S.T. Shiao, Y. C. Tuan, P.Z. Chian, J.W. Liao, H.Y. Chiou)

Weasel鼬鼠 (Mustela Sibirica taivana), adult, male. This animal was receiving treatment for injuries at the Taiwan Endemic Species Research Institute (TESRI) after being caught in leg-hold trap on April 8. While hospitalized, the animal showed good appetite and normal exercise. However, he was found dead three days later.

Morphological diagnosis:

1.         Bronchointersitial pneumonia, diffuse, moderate to severe, subacute, with eosinophilic intranuclear and intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies and nematode larva infection, lungs

2.         Extramedullary hematopoiesis, diffuse, moderate, chronic, with lymphoid depletion, spleen

3.         Hyperkeratosis and erosion, focally-extensive, severe, chronic, with intranuclear eosionophlic inclusion bodies, haired skin, right hind limb

4.         Nematode infection, multi-organ, moderate to severe, chronic, trachea, lungs, stomach, intestine and pancreas

5.         Cestode infection, focal, mild, chronic, small intestine

6.         RT-PCR (+)

Etiological Dx.

Canine Distemper in a Mustela sibirica taivana (Weasel)

Case 3. CSVP 2017-2949 (2017-2248-4, AHIRI, Y.C. Tu, J.C. Chang, W.C. Hsu, S. C. Hu)

Layer, ISA brown, 105-day-old. A flock of 2,000 layers obtained at 75-day-old of age from rearing layer farm showed clinical signs of anorexia, depression, emaciation, anemia, and death after raising 10-20 days. The morbidity rate was 20-30% and 5-10 birds were dead per day.

Morphological diagnosis:

1.     Liver: Amyloidosis, diffuse, marked, with hemorrhage, hepatocyte atrophy, and extramedullary hematopoiesis

2.     Pectoral muscle: myositis, necro-granulomatous, chronic-active, multifocal to coalescing, with multinucleated giant cells

Etiological Dx.

Avian amyloidosis

Case 4. CSVP 2017-2950 (NTU2016-1342, NTU GIMCP, C.W. Yen, H.W. Chang)

Canine, Miniature Schnauzer, 11-year-old, female. Seizure episode, incontinence and hypoglycemia was noted. Laparotomy revealed a mass at the end of the right pancreatic lobe merged into relatively normal pancreatic parenchyma.

Morphological diagnosis:

1.     Malignant insulinoma, with invasion to regional lymph node left lobe of pancreas.

2.     Malignant insulinoma, right lobe of pancreas.

3.     Reactive lymph node, in the late phase, mesentery lymph node.

4.     Lymphatic sinus ectasia, regional lymph nodes.

5.     Steroid-induced hepatopathy, left lateral lobe of liver

6.     IHC: Insulin (+)

Etiological Dx.

Malignant insulinoma in canine

Case 5. CSVP 2017-2951 (NTU2016-3091, NTU GIMCP, C.F. Kao, C.R. Jeng)

Malayan Gharial馬來長吻鱷(Tomistoma schlegelii), 42-year-old, intact male. The animal was attacked by another individual in the same rearing environment and begun refusing to enter the water later on. He was then isolated for medical treatment and prevention of further assault. He died few days later with no overt clinical symptom.

Morphological diagnosis:

1.     -- Pneumonia, necrohemorrhagic and granulomatous, multifocal  and locally extensive, chronic active, severe, with edema and myriad intralesional, angioinvasive fungal hyphae and deposition of oxalate crystals, lung

2.     -- Epicarditis and myocarditis, heterophilic, multifocal, acute, mild  to moderate, with epicardial mesothelial hyperplasia, heart

3.     -- Hepatitis, necrotizing, multifocal, acute, mild to moderate, liver

4.     -- Gastritis, necrotizing and erosive, multifocal and locally extensive, chronic active, mild to moderate, with intralesional fungal conidia and hyphae, morphologically compatible with Candida spp., stomach

5.     -- Fecal lithiasis, colon

Etiological Dx.

Mycotic pneumonia in a Malayan Gharial (Tomistoma schlegelii)

Case 6. CSVP 2017-2952 (NTU2016-2538, NTU GIMCP, Y.C. Luo, V. F. Pang)

Feline, Domestic shorthair, 8-year-old, female. A round, alopecic mass at Rt. flank region was noted after May and fungal infection was suspected. The patient has been treated with anti-fungal ointment and no marked effect was observed. Surgical removal was performed

Morphological diagnosis:

1.     Dermatitis and panniculitis, pyogranulomatous, necrotizing, multifocal to locally extensive, severe, with lipocysts and many intravacuolar and intrahistiocytic acid-fast bacilli, right flank skin mass

2.     DDx (Acid-fast bacilli)
