Case 1. CSVP 2024-3254 (NTU2023-2183, NTU GIMCP, W.T. Lee and W.H. Huang)

 French bulldog, 1 year-old, female spayed. Large amount of blood-like, vulvar discharge and repeated estrus were observed. Abdominal ultrasound revealed moderate fluid in right uterine horn and ovariohysterectomy was performed on 2023/9/13. The received specimen was a pair of the female reproductive tracts, from ovaries to uterine bodies. There were two expansile, cystic structures noted on the section of the right ovary, and one within the left ovary.

Morphologic diagnosis :

Ovary: Intraovarian cysts, with mild suppurative oophoritis, both ovaries

Oviduct and uterus : Hemorrhage and congestion, mild, acute

Dx: Canine Luteinizing Cyst

 Case 2. CSVP 2024-3255 (NTU2023-526, NTU GIMCP, N.W. Cheng, Y.H. Cheng, and Victor Pang)

Domestic short hair cat, 15 year-old, male castrated. Bulging of the left eye was noted since January 2023. The left eye was accidentally injured and perforated when administrated medicine by the host in March 2023. Enucleation of the left eye and the left third eyelid was performed. The submitted specimen included the left (OS) eyeball with some foreign bodies attached to the cornea, and four pieces of partially hair-coated skin tissue (third eyelid). Under cross sections of the eyeball, the cornea and bilateral iris were heterogeneously brown and thickened.

Morphologic diagnosis :

Feline diffuse iris melanoma (FDIM), with ciliary body and scleral invasion, OS eyeball

Keratitis, ulcerative, and anterior uveitis suppurative, severe, locally extensive to diffuse, chronic active, with fibrosis, edema, and anterior synechiae, OS eyeball

Epithelial hyperplasia and ballooning degeneration, third eyelid

Muscular degeneration, possibly upper or lower eyelid adjacent to third eyelid

Lab. examination:

Masson’s trichrome stain:  Mild to moderate collagenous fibrosis is highlighted in the granulation tissue under

 SD rat, adult. After inducing lung injury by administering bleomycin via tracheal instillation, different drugs were administered to evaluate their therapeutic effects on the lung injury.

Morphologic diagnosis :

Lung : Pneumonia, interstitial, chronic, moderate to severe, with pulmonary fibrosis, emphysema, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT).

Lab. examination:

MT: (+) collagen

IHC: α-SMA; IHC-Fibronectin (+)

Dx: The rodent model of Bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis

Case 4. CSVP 2024-3257 (CP24-03006, ADDC NCHU, Y.H. Liu,  J.H. Shien, J.W. Liao, and S.C. Ou)

Layers, 27-week-old, exhibited symptoms such as facial swelling, coughing, and fever, with an accumulated egg drop rate of approximately 4% over 5 days. The mortality rate was around 0% to 0.3% per day.

Morphologic diagnosis:

Infraorbital sinusitis, heterophilic and lymphoplasmacytic, severe, diffuse, subacute to chronic, infraorbital sinus

Rhinitis, fibrinopurulent, moderate to severe, diffuse, nasal cavity

Dermatitis and panniculitis, fibrinopurulent, moderate, locally-extensive, with perivasculitis and vasculitis, skin.

Lab. examination:

Bacteria isolation and identification: Avibacterium paragallinarum (+)

PCR: Mycoplasma gallisepticum(MG) (-); Avian metapneumovirus(SHS) (-)

Dx: Infectious coryza (IC in Layers

Case 5. CSVP 2024-3258 (CO23-05001, ADDC NCHU, C.C. Chang, H. Y. Chang and H.Y. Chiou)

 Masked Palm Civet, subadult male, was incidentally found dead. Grossly, the civet was extremely emaciated and diffusely alopecic.

Morphologic diagnosis:

Skin: Epidermal hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis and parakeratosis, diffuse, chronic, severe, with  mild microabscesses, serocellular crusts and numerous intracorneal mites

Skeletal muscle: multifocal, acute, moderate with fragmentation

Lymph node: focal, chronic, mild, mesenteric lymph node

Lab. examination:

Skin scraping: Notoedres cati (+) = Pretarsi, Blunt spines and scale-like striations, Long terminal setae, Dorsal setae surround the anus, Fused oxal apodemes

PCR reaction for ITS-2 region (241 bp): Notoedres cati (AF251801) with 97.5% similarity (246 bp)

Dx: Notoedric mange (Notoedres cati) in a free-ranging masked palm civet (Paguma larvata taivana)

Black-feathered native chickens, 8-week-old, showed clinical signs of reluctance to move and stunted growth from 5-week-old. The cumulative incidence rate was approximately 1.05%.

Morphologic diagnosis:

Tenosynovitis, necrotizing, locally-extensive, severe, chronic-active, with synovial membrane hyperplasia, tendon of tarsal joint

Hepatitis, necrotizing, granulomatous, multifocal to coalescing, moderate to severe, chronic-active, liver

Interstitial pneumonia, locally-extensive, moderate, chronic-active, with multifocal necrosis, lung

Lymphoid depletion, multifocal, mild to severe, acute to chronic, with multifocal hemorrhage, bursa of Fabricius

Lab. examination:

Agar: Escherichia coli (+)

PCR: Joint: Mycoplasma synoviae (MS);            

RT-PCR: joint: Avian reovirus (ARV) (-)

Bursa: Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) (+) Very virulent IBDV (vvIBDV)

Dx: Bacterial Arthritis in Native Chickens
